I would like to spend the next few weeks on a series called Hearing Gods Voice. Touching on the fact that God actually speaks to us, why he speaks to us and how we can connect to Him.
There are countless examples in the Bible where God spoke to people. If He spoke to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Daniel, Ezekiel, Malachi, and Moses (to name but a few), I can promise you He is patiently waiting to have a mind-blowing conversation with you! But just like a child that just started talking, it takes time and practice for you to recognize His voice, and build your faith so that you can start walking in it.
Have you ever thought about what the difference is between a non-believer and a believer? Perhaps your thinking that a non-believer doesn’t believe in God and a believer does? Right?
Wrong. James 2:19 explains it strikingly, “You say you have faith, for you believe there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror”.
So if the enemy believes there is a God, does that make him a believer? NO! What makes you a believer, is having a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with God. There is no use in knowing everything about God but not actually knowing God.
He never created you, to fill you up with data so that you could give Him His desired outcome.
Having a personal relationship with someone means that you are FRIENDS.
Imagine this: you are in the hospital and you have two friends that comes to visit you. The one just drops off a book he wrote, for you to read. The other one, brings you a book he wrote, reads it with you, visits twice a day, sneaks in your favorite meal and he makes sure that you are happy! What type of friend would you want to be friends with?
The second one right? That is the kind of friendship God wants with you. He’s not the kind of friend that’s going to give you the Bible and never speak to you again. He’s the kind of friend that wants to chill with you, have conversations about everything, helping you, guiding you and most of all loving you.
There are more than 15 verses in the New Testament that states that God wants to be your friend. I personally love John 15:15. Jesus explains to His disciples; “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing: but I have called you My friends, for all the things that I heard from my father I have made known to you.”
How amazing is that? It gets better, Jesus even called the people who wronged Him his friends. Like Judas. Nothing you have ever done will make God love you less. He is waiting to have countless convos with you.
A friendship is always a two-way communication.
How many times have you caught yourself praying and you are literally just asking God for all the things you need Him to fix in your life? Not giving Him a second to say, Hi Danielle, I love you, or could we maybe hangout sometime?
We are so caught up with His presents that we forget about His presence.
God wants a real, personal friendship with you! Not a Facebook friendship where he can see what you are doing, but never truly speaks to you.
Here’s the secret to why you might be struggling to hear his voice;
John 16:12-13 This is Jesus speaking “I still have many things to say to you (see God wants to talk to you), but you cannot bear them now. However, When He, the spirit of truth has come. He will guide you into all truth: for he will not speak on His own authority but whatever he hears he will speak: and he will tell you things to come”.
Did you get that? Jesus says “I have many things to say to you”. He can’t tell you everything at once BUT He will send you his Holy Spirit, to guide you, and tell you everything that I need you to know AND the things to come.
WHAT? THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS? yip, that is pretty cool. The Holy Spirit is the perfect gentleman, He will never force Himself upon you. He is patiently waiting for you to invite Him into your life.
So whats the problem? Well, I think we might all be expecting God to speak in a loud, booming voice that blows your hair back (like in the cartoons). But sometimes it’s so subtle that you miss it. If God spoke to us with force we wouldn’t need faith to hear his voice, because we would have fear, and God does nothing through fear. When God speaks to you, He will speak to you by the moving of the Holy Spirit in your life.He will speak to you by His still small voice. And what you do after that will require faith.
Think of Moses and the burning bush. If that had to happen to me, I would probably be the first to run away. I mean, HELLO, it’s a burning bush, THAT TALKS. But that was God’s way of getting Moses’ attention.
How have God been trying to get your attention? Perhaps he wakes you up every night at the same time, or you find yourself with an intense emptiness and longing. God wants your attention. He wants to chat with you, like only real friends can.
- God still speaks to us, he never stopped speaking, we stopped listening.
- He is longing for a personal relationship with you.
- We need the infilling of the Holy Spirit to hear God’s voice.
If you want the Holy Spirit to guide you, you need to welcome him into your life. Perhaps you have given your life to God many years ago and you feel like you have not truly stepped into a personal relationship with Him, well there is good news, you can recommit your life with this prayer (find it at the end of the blog – Backslide to Fast forward). If you have never given your life to Jesus and you feel ready to make this amazing decision, pray our salvation prayer. AND THEN (here’s the deal breaker, that is going to change your life) ask the Holy Spirit to fill you up and make your heart His home.
Pray with me;
Heavenly Father I know that your word says when we ask with an expectant heart you, you will not leave us empty-handed. Lord I desire to be filled afresh by your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit come and dwell in my heart. Father, how I thank You that by faith in the Lord Jesus, Your Holy Spirit has made me alive in Him and placed me into the family of God and the Body of Christ.
Thank You that He has set His seal of ownership upon me and taken up residence within my heart.. so as to empower me in my spiritual walk, as He gradually transforms me in to the lovely likeness of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. I pray that the Holy Spirit would lead and guide me in all things, and that I would learn to listen to the gentle promptings of His voice.. as I read Your Word or commune with You in prayer. Give me grace to recognise His still small voice as I search though the scriptures each day and the wisdom to discern Your spiritual nudges, when godly Christians are prompted to offer direction and give me advice.
May I maintain an open heart and develop a teachable spirit – and I pray that I may walk in Your ways and live a life that is well pleasing to You, glorifying my Father in heaven, I ask this in Jesus name,
You are ready to start the most life changing conversation of your life, with your creator, father, and friend.
In the next blog I will explain how we become aware of His presence. It is in His presence that we can hear His voice.
